Created in 1955 to meet the demands of professional pilots, the GMT-Master was the first watch to keep time in three time zones. The Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II has a 24-hour rotatable bezel, a 24-hour hand, as well as an hour hand which can be adjusted independently.

Ceramic bezel
The Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II bezel features an extremely hard and exceptionally beautiful ceramic material with excellent corrosion-resistant properties. Its colour is not affected by ultraviolet rays and it is virtually scratchproof. Using innovative processes, the numerals are engraved and filled with gold to enhance their legibility.

Triplock winding crown
The Triplock winding crown is designed to function at depths greater than most submarines. It screws down like a nautical hatch and incorporates three separate gaskets to seal out water and foreign matter.

This technically complex device consists of more than ten components and is waterproof to a pressure of 500 bars, or over half a ton per square centimetre.

Hairspring
In a watch, the hairspring is vital to ensuring the movements precision. Rolex has pushed the performance of the hairspring to new limits. For its blue PARACHROM hairspring, Rolex created an innovative alloy, and designed the hairspring to be exceptionally resistant to magnetic fields and shocks, a new approach to an age-old challenge.

A unique alloy for a unique application.

904l steel
Only a robust corrosion-resistant, stainless-steel alloy can meet the uncompromising standards of Rolex. It, therefore, uses a unique composition of 904L steel, which can withstand the harshest environments, from the highest peaks to the depths of the ocean. Rolex 904L steel can be polished to achieve an impeccable finish, contributing to the Oysters characteristic beauty.

Gold
In pursuit of perfection, Rolex makes its gold in its own foundry. It has the autonomy to apply the most rigorous standards and the freedom to create new alloys. Its yellow, white and Everose gold are timeless symbols of prestige and luxury.

Oyster case
Crafted from a solid block of stainless steel, gold or platinum, the Oyster case undergoes more than 150 manufacturing steps. A miniature safe, it ensures absolute waterproofness and protects the Rolex movement under the most extreme conditions.

Waterproofness
Waterproofness is at the heart of the Rolex identity. Rolex invented the first waterproof watch, the Oyster, in 1926. Each Oyster is waterproof down to 100 metres/330 feet and is submitted to rigorous testing to ensure waterproofness beyond its guaranteed depth. Models created for divers symbolise the supremacy of Rolex waterproofness at even greater depths.

Rolex watches have conquered seas and oceans. A strong and privileged association with water is evident throughout the collection.

Calendar
At midnight, the Rolex calendar instantly jumps to the next date. This ingenious mechanism was introduced in 1945 on the Oyster Perpetual Datejust and assures perfect accuracy of the movement during the date change which is triggered using stored energy.

Movement
The height of precision, the self-winding Oyster movement is entirely engineered and manufactured by Rolex. Robust and reliable, every movement guarantees long-term high performance and is an officially certified Swiss chronometer.

Perpetual rotor
In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the Perpetual rotor, the worlds first self-winding wristwatch mechanism. The Perpetual rotor allows the watch to run continuously as every flick of the wrist winds the movement. The energy generated is stored in the mainspring, which ensures an autonomy of 48 to 72 hours, depending on the model.

Cosc
Each Rolex movement is submitted to rigorous testing by COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an independent organisation. For 15 days and 15 nights, each movement is tested in five different positions and subjected to three different temperatures. To be certified as a Swiss chronometer, the movement must successfully pass the COSC testing.
